Solar power comes in 2 conventional forms:

Solar Thermal, produces direct heat through the heat of the suns rays
Solar Photovoltaic, producing electricity from the suns rays

In Scotland, we greatly underestimate the energy that is available to us from direct sunshine particularly in the summer months.

Solar Thermal Energy

Solar thermal systems take many forms see Wikipedia for more details. However the systems that will work for most applications in the UK are flat collector plates mounted on the roof with a southern aspect.

The collector absorbs incoming solar radiation heating the water/glycol
This heat is transferred to your hot water tank or space heating

That’s really all there is to it. Once installed energy is free aside from a low pump and controller running cost. Depending on your heat demand and system size it could meet between 25% and 100% of you heat demand.

Solar Photo Voltaic PV

Solar photovoltaic panels produce electricity directly from the suns energy. See Wikipedia For more info.

Silicon: PV panels are made mainly from silicon
Photons: From the Sun produces electricity within the silicon
DC Electricity: DC current is produced however your house needs AC current
Inverter: Converts DC to AC. Can be grid connected or off-grid with batteries

Solar PV remains relatively exensive due to the cost of silicon but prices are moving downwards. Typically customers can meet 10 to 50% contribution to your electrical costs over the year.
